BCP: How Are You Coding—and Are You Really Providing What You Coded?

Coding accuracy is not just about selecting an HCPCS code—it’s about ensuring the device and components delivered truly match what was billed. This session addresses common and high-risk coding errors seen across practices, including mismatches between codes and parts provided, misuse of templates, misunderstandings of code descriptors, and insufficient custom fabrication documentation and work orders. Attendees will learn why correct coding is always the supplier’s responsibility, how seemingly routine shortcuts increase audit exposure, and what immediate corrections can be made to improve compliance. Practical examples will help participants identify risky habits and implement fixes they can apply today.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify common coding errors and documentation deficiencies that increase compliance and audit risk in O&P practices.
2. Explain the importance of aligning billed HCPCS codes with the actual components, parts, and services provided.
3. Apply practical strategies to improve coding accuracy, work order documentation, and compliance with payer and regulatory requirements.

This is a Business Certificate Program elective under the Healthcare Operations pillar. Note: At the end of this course, you will receive a certificate for CE credit upon successful completion of the quiz.  Please note that is a certificate for CE credits only and not the IIOP and AOPA O&P Business Certificate. The IIOP and AOPA O&P Business Certificate requires enrollment in and successful completion of four AOPA electives (one from each pillar) and four IIOP core courses. Upon successful completion of the Business Certificate Program, AOPA will reach out to you about receiving your O&P Business Certificate. 

Individuals not participating in the AOPA and IIOP Business Certificate Program are still welcome to take this course for CE credit and/or educational purposes.
