BCP: Optimizing Revenue Cycle Management: External Resources, Risks, and Rewards

As margins tighten and administrative complexity grows, many healthcare practices turn to external resources to support revenue cycle management (RCM). This session examines when outsourcing makes strategic sense—and when it introduces risk. Attendees will explore common RCM models, including offshore teams, third-party billing services, and hybrid approaches. The presentation will highlight benefits such as scalability and cost efficiency, alongside risks related to compliance, data security, payer communication, and operational oversight. Real-world examples will illustrate how poorly structured arrangements can lead to audit exposure. The session will also outline best practices for vendor selection, contract structuring, performance metrics, and governance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common external RCM models, including offshore, third-party, and hybrid support structures used in O&P practices.
  2. Recognize operational, compliance, and data security risks associated with outsourced revenue cycle functions.
  3. Apply best practices for vendor oversight, performance monitoring, and governance to improve RCM outcomes while reducing audit exposure.
